Bonnie Barrera is an accomplished, veteran escrow officer with a secret weapon – she can conduct informative, professional, and friendly closings in both English and Spanish! Bonnie works from Independence Title’s Rollingwood Office, and has been managing transactions in both Spanish and English in Austin for more than 20 years. “There are very few Spanish-speaking escrow officers, and I love doing Spanish closings,” Bonnie says. “It’s so rewarding.”
It’s not just her language skills that make Bonnie a great closer – she’s got experience from every side of the transaction. She’s worked in the banking industry, as a manager for a real estate firm and as an escrow assistant before becoming a closer in 1998. “I came to the title industry for a change, and for less stress,” she laughs, with a touch of irony. Though the title industry is not less stressful, she loves it.
She says one of the best parts of her job is her co-workers, and being able to mentor and help her team. “It’s such a great feeling to see the people on your team grow and become escrow officers themselves,” she smiles. “I measure my success on how well my people progress.” By that measure, she’s got a lot to be proud of.
Bonnie joined Independence Title in 2005 when she heard that both Brian Pitman and Jay Southworth were involved. “I wanted to work for the top title company in town,” she says. “There was no doubt that Independence would be that title company with their leadership.” She hasn’t looked back.
Bonnie enjoys being involved in the real estate, business, and philanthropic communities in Austin and has served on many boards and committees throughout
the years. She’s been involved with the Hispanic Chamber and the National Association of Hispanic Real Estate Professionals, the ARC and Special Olympics, to name a few. She recently welcomed her first grandchild and is having fun being a new grandparent. She also enjoys heading to the coast with her family, hanging out at the beach, and saltwater fishing. She hails from south Texas and says, “You just can’t get the Corpus out of me!”
