Becky Kilfoy started in the title business while earning her Speech Communications degree at Texas A&M University. “I worked part-time as an assistant and did a lot of research at the courthouse. Everything was on microfiche,” she laughs. “What I remember loving about that job was that it was like reading a history book. There’s a lot of information in those files.”
After graduation, she and her family moved out of state for a few years and Becky worked with a custom home builder. Five years later, they came back to Texas, and settled in Allen, a suburb of Dallas. There, she got back into the real estate world as a licensed agent. Eventually, her favorite escrow officer recruited her into the title industry.
“Those years working for the builder and as an agent gave me a lot of perspective that I use every day as an Escrow Officer,” she says. “I truly understand the transaction from an agent’s point of view. I understand their process, what they need from an escrow officer, and have a deep understanding of the contract. All of these things have been invaluable.”
Her daughter got married, her son graduated and headed off to Texas A&M, and she found herself with an empty nest. After working in Austin for two weeks on a work project, her company asked if she’d like to move there to fill a position. She jumped at the chance. “I loved Austin! My daughter had moved to Columbus which is fairly close, and it was a bonus that Austin was closer to College Station.”
She worked in Austin for a few years before finally making the move to Independence Title. “What I love about this company is that there are so many people who have worked here for a long time. People find their home here and that appealed to me,” she says. “I wanted a company where I could plant roots and really build a book of business. With the support and tools we have, and the access to so many quality underwriters, I could not be more happy.”
Becky enjoys the social side of the business and getting to interact with buyers and sellers. “No day is ever the same; it’s always different. It’s amazing to get a snapshot into people’s lives. Some buyers cry at closing, some jump up and down, but it is always important to them,” she says. “I use my communications degree every day. I don’t mind having the difficult conversations. It’s important to me to keep everyone informed. It’s definitely better to be proactive than reactive.”
Becky is a newlywed and loves traveling with her husband. Between them, they have a beautiful blended family of 7 grown-up kids. “We have very inconvenient children,” she laughs. “They’re all over the place, including China and Alaska. So, we do a lot of traveling.” She’s also enjoys her “adventure book club,” that involves field trips and experiences related to the book they’ve finished.
